Ever wondered how the stars of your company got to where they are? They are liked by everyone and excel at every aspect of their job. What qualities make them stand out against everyone else?

Most of us have the intention and hopes for excelling at our positions, whether it is a monetary reason or to rise above the ranks and take on more responsibility. However, there are always those around us that seem to always know what needs to be done and how to get it right. They master the science behind being an exceptional contributing member of the team and the workplace would probably fall apart without them.

So, how do these workers seem to do it? What qualities do today’s workers possess that makes them outstanding?

Great workers do more than their personal share of work within the team. They are first to help out others when the work piles on, not only because they want to impress but because they are organized and on task with their own projects to be able to take on a larger workload.

While many workers in an office do enough just to get by, there are others that refuse to settle for the bare minimum. They take the initiative but are still a pleasure to work with and are easy to get along with. They produce quality work in a timely fashion and are always hungry to take on bigger projects to help out the team. They are vested in the company’s future and feel that the more the company succeeds, the more they will benefit.

It is very easy to develop tunnel vision and only be responsible for your own work. While it is not a requirement for you to worry about what your co-workers have on your plate, great workers are able to look at the bigger picture and anticipate problems. They are quick to take responsibility and are always looking for solutions, not the cause of the problems.

Today’s technology allows for a much more collaborative and social workplace. Employees that embrace this technology take recognition out of the hands of managers and apply it into their everyday lives. They recognize their colleagues for great work as often as needed. These employees know the importance of recognition and feedback and do not wait around for management to try and assess who had a hand in producing great work. They appreciate everyone’s hard work and take it upon themselves try to make sure everyone is recognized.

Regardless of how great of a worker you are, there are bound to be days that are harder for you. Whether it is a project gone wrong, a pressing deadline, or heat from management, how you handle bad days carries over to the rest of the team. Genuinely cheerful and upbeat colleagues are the ones that will have an easier time finding solutions to tough work situations and are much easier to be around. While everyone has to face pressure and stress at some point, those that can handle it without bumming out the rest of the team are admired.

The kind of worker you are does not only depend on the work you produce. While that is a big part of it, how you get along with your team, handle difficult situations and the magnitude of your overall impact within the company is a big part of how you are perceived by others.

Do you have stories about the most dependable workers you have worked with?
